They came with strollers and walkers, umbrellas and snacks some even brought chair in preparation for the long wait ahead, and almost all of them received what they came for: the H1N1 vaccine. |

Community gathers in El Monte to celebrate the life of Agustin Roberto “Bobby” Salcedo, an innocent victim in Mexico’s ongoing violent drug war.
From his time as a teacher and athletic coach at South El Monte High School, to being his old high school teachers’ boss while serving as an assistant principal at Mountain View High, to his final days as an El Monte High assistant principal, Salcedo’s death is being felt throughout the El Monte education community. Salcedo’s recent re-election to the El Monte City School District Board, which oversees the city’s 17 elementary schools. The 33-year-old educator was fatally shot December 30 while visiting his in-laws in Mexico.

Bobby is the first U.S. elected official to be killed in the ongoing violence in Mexico between drug cartels and federal troops. This has led to a public call for action by several local elected officials. State Sen. Gil Cedillo stated on the Senate floor on Monday that Salcedo was the first American elected official killed in Mexico’s war on drugs. “He should be the last,” Cedillo said. Sen. Gloria Romero (D-Los Angeles) asked the Senate to adjourn in Salcedo’s memory. She called on the U.S. and Mexican governments to bring his killers to justice, saying the murder brought Mexico’s organized-crime violence “home to us.” Assemblyman Mike Eng (D-Monterey Park) said at the vigil that Salcedo’s death should be heard all the way to the halls of the highest chambers in Washington D.C.
The family has established a memorial fund - the Bobby Salcedo Foundation - and is accepting donations in lieu of flowers. The money will be used for college scholarships and other tools to allow students to attend college, Carlos Salcedo said.

Speaking Thursday at the funeral Mass of Bobby Salcedo, Cardinal Roger Mahony urged the city's elected leaders to make the city drug free as a tribute to the slain educator and it is the United States' insatiable desire for illegal drugs that fuels a violent conflict in Mexico. He told elected leaders that the city and the San Gabriel Valley could honor Salcedo by working to eliminate illegal drug abuse in the community.
"The cost of drugs isn't what you pay for them, it is the lives, like Bobby's, that are lost," El Monte Mayor Andre Quintero said, paraphrasing the message. "As a country we need to do more to reduce consumption." |

Volunteer Now Volunteers Can Help Preserve El Monte History By Linda Fields Gold, Staff Writer Posted: 11/07/2009 06:05:01 PM PST
The first wagon train to use the Santa Fe Trail arrived in what became El Monte in 1849. The settlers found water and some decided to stay rather than head north to the gold fields. The streets of El Monte are named for those early pioneers like Peck, Durfee, and Garvey. The second wagon train came from Kentucky in 1851, and those settlers brought Lexington (Avenue) and other names into the mix. The building now used by the historical society has its own history. It was originally built as the city library in 1933, at the same time as the building that was the city hall, by the Works Projects Administration. In 1964, the library moved and the vacant building became the museum. The museum depicts area history through authentic period furniture, clothing, photos and lots of other items. There is also an early school room and Victorian parlor. There is even a Stanley Steamer, horseless carriage! Those vehicles ran on a steam engine, rather than gasoline or diesel. The Stanley Steamer was used in the Main Street parade on Disneyland's opening day, and there is a photo of Walt Disney with the car. The museum uses docents to guide visitors and school tours. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 1 to 3 p.m. Sundays. When volunteers first come, they act as receptionists. By reading, watching videos and following other volunteers, they learn the stories and facts to share with visitors. Volunteers must enjoy interacting with guests and feel comfortable sharing information with both adults and students. You do not need to be a resident of El Monte to be a docent here. "Operation Gobble Gobble"
Rep. Judy Chu, D-CA32, continued former Rep. Hilda Solis's traditional Thanksgiving week turkey giveaway Monday morning, Nov. 23, with "Operation Gobble," held at the San Gabriel Valley Water Company in El Monte. The Congresswoman and her staff, along with staff members from the San Gabriel Valley Water Company, handed out approximately 100 turkeys to 16 nonprofit groups from throughout the San Gabriel Valley and the East Los Angeles area. The turkeys, which were donated by the water company, will be distributed to needy local families during the holidays. "We hope that these turkeys provide a decent holiday meal and brighten the lives of many of our neediest residents," said Rep. Chu during the event. |

Assemblymember Mike Eng in collaboration with the San Gabriel Valley Water and Cal American Water Companies, hosted the 49th Assembly District’s annual “Operation Gobble” turkey giveaway today. Over 300 turkeys were distributed to various charitable organizations that serve low-income families in the San Gabriel Valley at today’s event, which was held at the Our Saviour Center Kids Campus located in the City of El Monte.

There are treasures located within the City of El Monte. Treasures that have been overlooked by most of the residents. It’s called the Emerald Necklace — an aptly named route of bike paths and greenways that still contain the natural beauty of its past that drew so many to the El Monte area.
On May 16, the City of El Monte will sponsor a 16-mile bike ride and health fair along the Emerald Necklace loop.
“There is this great biking infrastructure right here in El Monte. And almost no one in the general community knows about it, where it goes, where it starts, how to circumnavigate the city on it and how flat and easy a ride it really is,” said event director Matthew Weintraub. “This is a hidden gem in El Monte.
Cycling is a great, healthy way to exercise and spend time with friends and family.”
The ride, named A Tour of Two Rivers, kicks off at 9 a.m. from Pioneer Park near Santa Anita Avenue and Valley Boulevard. It heads north along the Rio Hondo bike path, through neighborhoods of north El Monte, back down the San Gabriel River, through Whittier Narrows - the "jewel" of the necklace - and back up the Rio Hondo to Pioneer Park.
Along the way, riders will see natural river beds and confluences lined with trees and vegetation inhabited by myriad birds and wildlife.
Weintraub, who is an avid cyclist teamed with El Monte Police Lt. Ken Alva and took the ride to see if the rally idea was right for El Monte.
“It took a couple of tries to find the right route (after getting lost on our first venture), and we determined that with proper funding, this could be a great family fun event,” said Weintraub.
Weintraub says that the city is targeting El Monte families, residents, business professionals and school age kids.
“We have not blanketed the cycling community with emails and flyers. We want to keep this event local. To teach about this local bike path,” said Weintraub.
Sponsors are expecting more than 500 to take part in the rally, which is why the cycling community hasn’t been targeted, said Weintraub. And the response has been tremendous not only from the community, who have signed up online, mailed in checks, and have stopped in City Hall, but from businesses who have stepped up to fund this event.
It will take about two to two and a half hours to complete the trip but the timing depends on how often someone stops to admire the scenery or to take photos, said Weintraub.
“It usually takes me about two hours, but I ride fast but stop often to see the sights.
“Plus we have scheduled a shorter route, the Up-To-Six mile route for the little kids. This route is really just the first 3 miles, and then a return on the same path. Those who want to ride 2 miles just travel one mile, then turn around and return. And this will continue until the 3 mile mark, at the Peck Road crossing. That is really the “point of no return”, where once you cross Peck, you are committed to the entire 16 mile loop,” he said.
Each rider pays $5 to take part in the rally and in return receives a Specialized commemorative cycling water bottle ($5 value), lunch (a $5 value), T-shirt ($6 value), and supervised and supported bike ride ($30 value).
